Facebook and Gtalk via Pidgin in Ubuntu 12.10

For Facebook


1.   Open Pidgin and select add account.
2.   In basic tab set
      Protocol:  XMPP
      Username:facebook username (not email address)
       Resource : Pidgin 
      Domain: chat.facebook.com
      password: facebook password 
      Local Alias: same as name in facebook
3.   In Advanced 
      Connection security : Use encryption if available
      untick allow  plain text auth over unencrypted streams
      Connect port: 443
      Connect Server: chat.facebook.com
      File Transfer Proxy and Bosh url must be empty
4.  If you are behind a proxy server the go to proxy tab and select HTTP and enter proxy server details
5.  Then save settings. This will connect you to the facebook chat.

 

 For Gtalk 


1.   Open Pidgin and select add account.
2.   In basic tab set
      Protocol:  XMPP
      Username:gmail username (without @gmail.com)
      Resource : Pidgin 
      Domain: gmail.com
      password: google password (generate application specific password and enter that if you have activated two stage verification in google account)
      Local Alias: same as name in google account
3.   In Advanced 
      Connection security : Use old-style SSL
      untick allow  plain text auth over unencrypted streams
      Connect port: 443
      Connect Server: talk.google.com
      File Transfer Proxy:proxy.eu.jabber.org or keep empty
      Bosh url must be empty
4.  If you are behind a proxy server the go to proxy tab and select HTTP and enter proxy server details
5.  Then save settings. This will connect you to the google chat.

Note: These settings are tested for facebook only on 32 bit Ubuntu 12.10 with Pidgin 2.10.6 (libpurple 2.10.6). The settings are tested for gtalk on both 32 and 64 bit Ubuntu 12.10 with Pidgin 2.10.6 (libpurple 2.10.6). I will test facebook chat on 64 bit soon and update the post
